What is CBD Oil? Benefits, Uses, Effects, and Safety of CBD

CBD oil is seemingly everywhere these days. Despite this popularity, many people aren’t sure what CBD is or where CBD oil comes from. This lack of information leaves consumers to ask common questions like “what is CBD oil?” and “how can CBD help me?”

Before we take a look at the benefits of CBD for you and your family, let’s first answer the question- what is CBD?

CBD, known formally as cannabidiol, is the main active ingredient in CBD oil. CBD is a compound created naturally by cannabis plants, especially hemp plants.

While the many benefits of CBD are just becoming known, we know that it interacts with receptors that keep the body balanced and running normally. This balancing effect is a main reason that CBD has become a popular daily wellness product.

Before you buy CBD, you may have concerns like “is CBD legal?” or “is CBD oil safe?” We will answer these questions in more detail below, but here is what you need to know.

First, hemp is federally legal in the United States and in countries throughout the globe. Hemp-derived products containing CBD are available for purchase online and delivery straight to your door, or at retailers in the United States and dozens of countries around the world.

However, not all CBD oil is created equal. Because of CBD’s soaring popularity, CBD oil products are flooding the market. Although HempMeds® follows strict quality standards when creating our CBD products, other companies might not, putting the quality and safety of their products into question.

Almost everyone can access top quality, safety tested CBD products from HempMeds® by shopping our online store or visiting our authorized retailers

So what is CBD oil and why is CBD so popular?

What is CBD Oil?

CBD oil is an extract of the cannabis plant that contains high levels of the valuable compound CBD. CBD oil is typically extracted from hemp, a type of cannabis that is used to make food, textiles, and other products. CBD is just one of over 100 cannabinoids presently identified in the cannabis plant.

Hemp derived CBD oil in products like those from HempMeds® is made from high CBD, low THC hemp, unlike most medical marijuana products, which are usually made from marijuana plants with high concentrations of intoxicating tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

THC is only present in trace amounts, while CBD dominates the plant’s makeup. This allows users to experience the balancing effects of CBD, without the intoxicating euphoria of THC.

To take advantage of CBD benefits, CBD oil has been added to a number of products: such as pure CBD oil concentrates, CBD oil tinctures, CBD capsules, CBD vape liquid, CBD edibles, CBD topicals and CBD bath products, hemp oil pet products, and even CBD isolate products

How Does CBD Work?

“What is CBD oil” may be your first question when considering a CBD oil product, but the real question we need to answer is, “What does CBD oil do?”

CBD is taken by consumers for its overall wellness effects, and it is its versatility that has led to so many different types of CBD products being created. This compound can be integrated into your daily routine to maintain balance in your functions, promote peak performance, encourage recovery after strenuous activity, and improve your general quality of life.

These beneficial effects exist because cannabinoids like CBD interact with the body’s self regulatory system. CBD works with the body through the endocannabinoid system (ECS).

The Endocannabinoid System

We can’t talk about how CBD works without talking about the endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system is found in all mammals and is made up of millions of cannabinoid receptor sites (CB1 and CB2 receptors) located throughout the body.

The endocannabinoid system is one of the regulatory systems in the human body, but most people do very little to support the health of this system because cannabinoids have not been part of the average modern diet.

First discovered in the late 1980’s, the endocannabinoid system regulates the body’s homeostasis, or general state of balance, so that you can feel and perform at your best.  Cannabis plants like hemp were once a part of the human diet, exposing people to cannabinoids that interact with the endocannabinoid system.

Researchers have suggested that the underlying cause of many issues related to health and wellness have to do with a syndrome related to a dysfunction in the endocannabinoid system, which is referred to as clinical endocannabinoid deficiency syndrome. This condition is linked to an under stimulation of the endocannabinoid system by cannabinoids.

CBD Oil Benefits

Any answer to the question “what is CBD oil?” would be incomplete without mentioning CBD oil benefits.

By positively affecting the endocannabinoid system, CBD promotes overall health and wellness in people young and old, and even those in perfect health, by modulating certain functions to keep their bodies in balance.

You can even find hemp oil with CBD for pets that is specifically formulated to safely allow your pets to experience the natural benefits of CBD.

We talk more about how CBD makes you feel below.

What are CBD Effects?

Is CBD Intoxicating or Psychoactive?

CBD does not cause intoxicating effects or impair your ability in any way. The hemp used in HempMeds® CBD oil products is of a naturally low THC variety. By definition, CBD is psychoactive in that it interacts with and cause effects in the brain. However, CBD is not intoxicating and doesn’t affect your ability to function properly.

There are thousands of unique varieties of hemp. The cultivars used for our CBD oil contain significantly higher concentrations of CBD than other varieties of hemp plant.

Using these uniquely potent plants, it is possible to extract cannabis oil that contains significant levels of cannabidiol, as well as nutrients like essential vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, terpenes, flavonoids, and trace levels other non-intoxicating cannabinoids. This oil can even be further refined into 99% pure CBD isolate.

The Difference Between CBD and THC

CBD and THC are the two most prominent cannabinoids found in cannabis, the plant genus that includes both hemp and marijuana. While there are over 100 different cannabinoids so far identified in cannabis by scientists, CBD and THC are by far the most extensively studied and best understood, largely because they are the most prevalent. However, there are significant differences between the ways CBD and THC affect your body.

One of the key differences between CBD and THC is whether or not the cannabinoid will cause euphoric effects when consumed. THC does cause intoxication, but CBD does not have the same euphoric effect when consumed.

CBD and THC both interact with the body through the endocannabinoid system, the signaling system in the bodies of mammals that is responsible for regulating a wide array of functions.

Both plant derived cannabinoids (specifically, phytocannabinoids) like CBD and THC and the body’s own endocannabinoids interact with this regulatory network through its cannabinoid receptors, found all throughout the body.

A properly functioning endocannabinoid system promotes healthy balance, peak performance, and greater well being.

How Does CBD Oil Make You Feel?

Because everyone’s body is different, CBD affect each individual in different ways in both the short term and long term. Varying sized servings of CBD oil can also change the overall effects.

However, it is important to remember that CBD will not cause you to experience a euphoric effect. It is completely non-intoxicating.

Our CBD oil comes from hemp, which contains no more than 0.3% THC per dry weight, far too low to cause intoxicating effects. Instead, many users report feeling calm and relaxed after using CBD products.

Due to CBD’s balancing effects, many users also report experiencing better sleep patterns, increased energy, and generally feeling better than before CBD.

Is CBD Oil Legal?

Yes, CBD derived from hemp plants is legal in the U.S. Growing, processing, and selling hemp and hemp derived products for commercial purposes in the United States is permitted. While hemp was previously only legal to grow for hemp pilot programs and research needs, the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill reclassified hemp as an agricultural commodity and made it legal to produce all hemp derived products, including CBD oil.

Although CBD oil is federally legal, some states have applied specific regulations regarding its sale and use. However, the acceptance of CBD in the U.S. is increasing, which is demonstrated in changing local policies.

Will CBD Show Up on a Drug Test?

If you are considering a CBD oil routine, you may be concerned about whether CBD oil will show up on a drug test.

Drug tests for marijuana can screen for different substances, and most standard drug tests do not detect the presence of CBD. Nearly all workplace drug tests are designed to test specifically for THC or its main metabolite, THC-COOH. There are only trace levels of THC found in hemp derived CBD oil, so in most cases hemp CBD will not cause a positive drug test when consumed at suggested servings.

Some studies, however, have shown that in rare cases hemp foods and hemp oil may show up as a positive result when testing urine or blood. A common drug testing method can also sometimes mistake the presence of CBD for THC and produce a false positive.

Anyone who is concerned about having a positive drug test should avoid consuming CBD oil, even when derived from hemp. If you’re in the United States Military, a first responder, or a competitive athlete that is subject to strict testing, we recommend that you not ingest CBD oil before talking with your healthcare, employer, or drug screening company.

What is a Serving of CBD?

Another question we often get from our customers is in regards to how much CBD they should use each day. Unfortunately, there is no universal standard serving size of CBD. Even within HempMeds® store, the amount of CBD per serving in our products ranges from a few milligrams of CBD per serving in our tinctures to a couple hundred milligrams of CBD per serving in our RSHO™ Maximum Strength.

The right amount of CBD per day is a personal choice that is based on your individual needs, routine, and budget.

Many consumers have settled on 50 mg of CBD a day, but we suggest you find your own perfect number for yourself. Try starting with a serving size lower than your goal, and then increasing the amount you take each day until you reach a level that is comfortable for you.

Is CBD Safe?

HempMeds® customers also want to know that the CBD oil products they are using are safe. As mentioned above, our CBD oil products are non-intoxicating, so they can be used by all the members of your family.

We also take steps to protect the integrity of our products throughout their creation. HempMeds® rigorous quality control processes ensure the safety and reliability of our CBD oil products.

Our CBD oil comes from non-GMO hemp grown in the Netherlands without the use of herbicides, pesticides, or chemical fertilizers that can negatively impact the finished products.

To further ensure its safety, our CBD oil is tested three separate times throughout cultivation and manufacturing to guarantee it is free of contaminants. HempMeds® has implemented this Triple Lab Tested® process to verify the quality of our CBD oil and CBD products so that we can be confident that we have the best CBD oil products on the market.

Our industry leading safety measures led to our RSHO™ Gold Label CBD oil to become the first company to have its hemp CBD oil products included in the Prescribers’ Digital Reference or “PDR” (formerly known as the The Physicians’ Desk Reference).

The PDR delivers comprehensive and innovative knowledge on the health industry’s products and services to support the prescribing decisions of health professionals. Our inclusion in the PDR represents a significant milestone for the CBD industry.

HempMeds® CBD oil products were also one of the first to receive certification seals from the U.S. Hemp Authority. The U.S. Hemp Authority Certification Program is administered by experienced quality assurance and verification professionals from industry leading food and agricultural companies. To receive organization’s seal, companies must have met several stringent industry standards laid out for quality and safety.

How We Make Top Quality CBD Oil Products

All of our CBD products start with our top quality, expertly cultivated hemp at their core. Our hemp is grown by 5th generation farmers in the Netherlands using organic practices that avoid the application of herbicides, pesticides, and chemical fertilizers that could potentially contaminate our products or harm the ecology near our farms.

While domestic hemp is now available in the U.S., HempMeds® made the decision to continue to source our hemp from our farm in Europe for a number of reasons.

Unlike in the U.S. where hemp is a new crop, our farm in the Netherlands has five generations of experience cultivating hemp. Domestic farms growing hemp have had a few years of experience at most and are still experimenting with the ideal cultivars of hemp and best cultivation practices to produce top quality hemp. In comparison, our farm in the Netherlands already have the skills and expertise in place to harvest the best hemp available for our CBD oil products. This is because hemp has been cultivated in Europe uninterrupted for centuries, while in the U.S. it is only just legal again after hemp cultivation was banned for most of the past 80 years.

Extraction and Testing

After starting with our top quality hemp, HempMeds® takes steps to ensure the integrity of our products and to protect our customers, including our safe extraction process and our Triple Lab Tested® standard.

Our hemp plants are first tested during cultivation to ensure that they are producing the correct levels of cannabinoids like CBD and are free of any contaminants.

After seasonal harvests of our hemp, these high CBD hemp crops are put through a specialized carbon dioxide extraction process to yield a hemp oil that is naturally high in cannabidiol. This extraction technique has been adapted from the food industry for use in CBD oil extraction.

Popularly, CO2 extraction is used to remove the caffeine from decaffeinated coffee. The thick, high CBD oil we extract from hemp is different from the hemp seed oil that is used in cooking, which contains only trace amounts of CBD, making it a poor source of the cannabinoid.

This pure hemp extract is then tested for safety, quality, and cannabinoid content to ensure our products of the highest quality.

Finally, the imported bulk CBD hemp oil is combined with other ingredients by our formulators to create our extensive lineup of internationally recognized brands – including Dixie Botanicals®, Real Scientific Hemp Oil™, and HempMeds®.

The finished products are then tested for a third and final time to once again ensure our products are of the highest quality. This is our standard Triple Lab Testing® process that all our CBD oil products must complete.

In the natural product industries, these rigorous testing practices are not required by regulations — but nothing is more important to us than the quality of the products we provide our customers.

These strict quality and testing standards earned HempMeds® one of the first certification seals from the U.S. Hemp Authority, recognizing our products for their superior quality and safety.

CBD oil capsules

Most people are used to taking a morning multivitamin, so with CBD oil capsules, it’s easy to get your CBD into your daily routine. Most CBD capsules contain a moderate serving of CBD, usually 25 mg or more. If you start your day with your morning fish oil capsule or multivitamin, these CBD capsules could be for you.

HempMeds® also offers functional CBD products in our Everyday Wellness line. These CBD products include Digestive Support, Sleep Support, and Immune Support.

CBD oil tinctures

Some of the most popular hemp CBD oil products are those in liquid form, made by diluting CBD oil concentrate into alcohol, MCT oil, or other natural oil base. Sometimes referred to as CBD tinctures or CBD sprays, they usually offer a smaller serving, from 1-31 mg per serving, which is enough for most people to use daily or throughout the day.

While available in unflavored versions, CBD liquids and tinctures also come in great flavors, making them enjoyable to use by all the members of your family.

CBD oil balm

CBD oil topicals like nourishing CBD salves, lotions, and bath products can be applied directly onto the skin or hair to capture the benefits of CBD. pure CBD powder

Despite its concentration, CBD isolate effects are similar to other CBD concentrates, and it can be used in a variety of ways. It can be consumed itself, added to foods and beverages, or vaporized. You can even add CBD isolate to other CBD products to increase their potency.

If you are looking for a pourable CBD products, CBD isolate is also available blended with MCT oil in CBD liquid RSHO-X™.

Perhaps the most enjoyable way to take CBD is through CBD edibles. CBD edibles are food products that have been infused with hemp derived CBD. Generally, CBD edibles usually contain a lower serving of CBD, usually 5 to 10 mg of CBD each, allowing you to easily increase or decrease your intake of CBD throughout the day based on your individual wellness needs.
