03 Jul Can You Fly with CBD Oil?
In most cases, you can bring your HempMeds® CBD hemp oil supplements with you when you travel.
Once you start experiencing the natural benefits of incorporating CBD supplements into your daily health routine, there’s no doubt you’ll want to pack your products with you wherever you go.
But is it okay to fly with CBD oil?
In most cases, yes!
Before jetting off with your CBD supplement, there are a few considerations you should be aware of. Here’s what you need to know about taking CBD oil with you on a plane.
Flying with CBD Oil
Flying with hemp-derived CBD oil is legally permitted under federal law, provided the product meets the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) rules around container sizes of liquids and gels.
Derived from the seed and stalk of hemp plants, HempMeds® full-spectrum CBD oil products are legal under federal law, even if containing trace amounts of THC. In the United States, CBD from hemp is considered a dietary supplement. Our CBD hemp oil is an imported hemp product, and contains less than 0.3% THC by weight, excluding it from the Controlled Substances Act.
While it is the TSA’s policy to focus on air safety issues and not actively search for cannabis, they can stop you from attempting to travel with other forms of cannabis containing high levels of THC. Because our CBD products contain no more than 0.3% THC, you should have no issues getting through TSA security checks.
Our Triple Lab Testing™ process ensures that all of our CBD products contain reliable cannabinoid levels so there’s no risk of our products containing more than trace levels of THC. We also offer isolated CBD products, such as our RSHO™ CBD Isolate and Dixie Botanicals® Kicks, which are completely THC-free.
While hemp-derived CBD oil is legal in the U.S., it is suggested that you research the laws in the states you are flying from and to. Individual states are able to pass their own laws regulating hemp-derived CBD, and a small number of states have chosen to do so – unfortunately placing hemp CBD products into the same category as marijuana. These state laws may impact how local security checkpoints screen and it is a good idea to look up the rules and laws wherever you plan to go.
Following TSA Rules and Requirements
To make sure that you’re able to pass the airport security check without any issue, you’ll want to be sure that your CBD products stay within TSA requirements.
The TSA Liquids Rule states that you cannot carry on bottles or containers that hold more than 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters of liquid. Any liquid, aerosol, gel, cream, or paste in a container larger than this will be flagged, removed, and require additional screening.
The TSA requires that all smaller sized containers of liquids and gels go through the security checkpoint in a single quart-size, resealable bag. Before going through security, you’ll need to remove your plastic bag holding your CBD products and other liquid containers so that they can go through the X-ray machine.
Most HempMeds® CBD supplements meet this carry-on Liquids requirement. The size limitation established by the TSA only excludes our RSHO™ Liquids, selected Cannabis Beauty Defined® products, like our exfoliant and toner, and our Cibaderm® bath products. You can still bring these larger CBD products with you, but they will need to be placed in checked baggage.
Looking for a way to bring your CBD and want to avoid having to deal with the TSA Liquid Rule?
There is no easier way to take our CBD hemp oil products with you on your travel adventures than with our RSHO™ CBD Capsules. These convenient capsules provide you with 25 mg per serving, and because they aren’t a liquid or gel, they pack easily and can be left in your carry-on bag at the TSA checkpoint.
Our CBD edible products, Dixie Botanicals® Kicks, can also be kept in your carry-on bag.
Can You Use CBD on a Plane?
Traveling doesn’t need to keep you from encouraging balance in your body with daily CBD. In nearly every case, you can even use our CBD products while you’re on the plane.
Enjoy a couple drops of our Dixie Botanicals® Dew Drop tinctures or swish down a single RSHO™ CBD Capsule with your in-flight beverage. The air in an airplane can be drier than normal, and you may find benefit from using our Cannabis Beauty Defined® moisturizer to nourish your face and neck, or our RSHO™ Salve to rehydrate your lips.
If you typically get your daily CBD by vaping our RSHO™ CBD Isolate, you will need to wait until you get off the plane before using the product. Vaping and smoking any product is not permitted on airplanes.
Tips for Flying with CBD Oil
Planning to fly with your hemp-derived CBD product? Here’s how you can make sure that you follow the law and TSA rules.
- Only fly with hemp-derived CBD oil products. Not all CBD products are made from hemp. If you’ve obtained cannabis products elsewhere that are derived from marijuana, keep in mind that they will likely contain THC levels above the federal threshold. This includes most CBD products purchased from a medical or recreational marijuana dispensary. The TSA is a federal agency, which means federal laws apply in airports. If a TSA security officer observes marijuana products during security, they will refer the matter to a law enforcement officer.
- Check your CBD product’s labels. Make sure that the label of your CBD product clearly signifies that it is made from hemp.
- Pack your CBD product in the right bag. If your CBD supplement is 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less, it can be stored in a quart-size resealable bag with your other liquid products like toiletries and carried on the plane. Store it in your carry-on where it’s easily accessible so you can take it out quickly when you go through security check. Any liquid CBD products that are more than 3.4 ounces need to go into a checked bag.
