Does CBD oil make you sleepy?

Recreational cannabis use has a pretty good reputation for causing or at least inducing feelings of sleepiness and shut-eye. Marijuana strains with high levels of THC, especially indica, have a well-deserved reputation of being so strong that some strains can flat out numb your body and put you to sleep. The terpene, Myrcene, may be one of the reasons why this happens. This form of a “couchlock” high certainly works for relaxation, stress relief, and bedtime. However, we’re talking about a THC high: what about CBD? Is one of the side effects of taking CBD hemp oil that it will make you sleepy, too?

What is CBD hemp oil?

First, let’s start with what CBD hemp oil is. Hundreds, maybe thousands of people learn about it every day, and those folks deserve a little primer. (If you already know all about CBD, feel free to skip ahead.)

CBD (cannabidiol) is a naturally-occurring compound found in the hemp plant; there are more than 140 different cannabinoids in cannabis, but THC and CBD are the most recognizable and understood.

CBD hemp oil is extracted from the inflorescences of cannabis plants (hemp). This pure CBD hemp oil is extracted from the cannabis varieties that are naturally abundant in CBD and low in THC. A specialized extraction process is used to yield highly concentrated CBD oil or pure cannabidiol that also contains other nutritious material such as omega-3 fatty acids, terpenes, vitamins, nutrients, chlorophyll, amino acids, and more.

However, CBD is non-psychoactive and is not, by definition, a controlled substance; it’s hemp. CBD offers a variety of health and nutritional benefits without the high associated with THC products. CBD is legal across the states, no med cards or prescriptions necessary.

Our CBD oil products

Pure hemp cannabidiol oil can be consumed directly on its own. Over the last few years, great advances in CBD hemp oil product development have led to what are now dozens of different types of CBD hemp oil products, including oil via oral applicators, liquids, capsules, tinctures, and chews. (You can find our full line HERE.) Concentrated pure CBD hemp oil can also be infused into skin and body care products and used topically.

Our understanding of CBD cannabis oil has expanded and we’re more aware today than ever of the cannabinoid’s potential. Studies on CBD’s natural health benefits are extensive and groundbreaking research is being done regularly. We suggest you review the wide body of scientific research on CBD to get a better understanding of its overall health value.

How CBD oil works: the endocannabinoid system

Whether or not CBD oil can make you drowsy is an interesting question. As we’ll see later, even scientific studies seem to differ and contradict each other. One thing we do know is that CBD interacts with our endocannabinoid system to help our bodies achieve homeostasis, which is a balance in our bodily functioning systems. This could easily help relieve stress, and in turn, help us sleep better.

CBD hemp oil acts on the endocannabinoid system (ECS) within our own body and is a vital cellular-signaling system that is involved in modulating pain, appetite, mood, memory, and cellular life cycles. The endocannabinoid system is an essential regulator of bodily function in many facets. There is hardly any physiological process that is not affected by it to some degree.

Scientists have made a lot of progress in understanding how CBD produces its calming effects in the body—and there’s still more to learn. We know that CBD interacts with many different receptors in the brain. These interactions create changes in the activity of neurotransmitters, hormones, and other cells throughout the brain and body. Through these interactions, CBD appears to be able to affect many of the body’s functions, from sleep-wake cycles to emotional regulation.

CBD and sleep: common sense

Are there side effects to CBD oil? Does CBD oil help you sleep or fall asleep? It depends on how you look at it. CBD oil has a soothing, calming effect on its user. Many of our customers, when writing reviews about our products, talk about how “relaxed” it makes them feel.

Now, if two people were trying to fall asleep, which one do you think would fall asleep faster and sleep better: a person who is stressed out and tense, or a person who felt calm and relaxed?

Most sleep problems and disorders can be traced back to stress. Common sense dictates that less stress should equate to more and better quality sleep. Again, everybody and every body is different, so what makes one person tick isn’t necessarily going to have the same effect on someone else. In an interesting twist, one study shows that smaller amounts of CBD intake resulted in being more alert and less likely to sleep, while increased amounts lead to sleep-inducing bliss. Read on…

CBD and sleep: the study of less and more

In one study, CBD appears to have the opposite effect on sleep, depending on the serving size administered.

In a 2013 study published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, researchers found that with mice as test subjects, smaller amounts of CBD made the mice more active, while higher doses promoted more sleep. Ok, that’s pretty interesting, but what about human beings?

Studies involving healthy human volunteers appear to agree with the animal-tested findings. In the study, those who received CBD reported sleeping longer, with fewer periods of wakefulness or restlessness.

Conversely, when CBD is given in low doses, subjects typically report feeling more stimulated rather than drowsy.

In essence, these studies suggest that humans react to CBD much like other mammals do: At low doses, CBD it may be stimulating; at high doses, sedating.

CBD and sleep: the bottom line

A daily serving of CBD can help you relax, and that can certainly help you sleep better. It also appears that the right amount of CBD can also lead to more sleep.

As we’ve stressed before, each person’s body and mind is different, and people react to different things in different ways. We comply with regulations set forth by the FDA and do not make claims or imply that it should be taken for any particular ailment.
