CBD products from European grown hemp

What CBD Retailers Should Know About European Hemp

The hemp used to make all of HempMeds®’ CBD oil products is grown naturally by a family farm in the Netherlands with generations of history in hemp cultivation. Here’s what you should know about European hemp.

Today more than ever before people are paying attention to what they are putting in their bodies. People want to know where things come from. Is it certified organic? Pesticide-free? Non-GMO? These words have become common among a large sector of the United States and that sector is growing.

If you’re anything like us, then you agree, quality matters. When it comes to hemp-derived CBD, the same rules apply. That’s why HempMeds® chose the absolute best source for its CBD products. There is no mystery in the contents. We know where each drop or capsule comes from and the process that took place for it to get here.

It’s because of our dedication to providing consumers with only the highest quality products that we source our hemp from Europe. As the first-to-market CBD maker and distributor in the U.S., we knew it was up to us to create and establish industry-leading standards that ensure high-quality CBD products that consumers can always trust.

In the United States, hemp only became federally to grow in December of 2018. Before that, it had been illegal since before World War II. Farmers in the U.S. are just starting to learn and apply the best cultivation techniques already mastered by European growers to improve their hemp varieties.

Keep reading to learn why we choose to make our CBD products from European hemp and get to know the generational family-owned farm in the Netherlands that cultivates our plants.

Hemp in Europe: Masters of Hemp Cultivation

Hemp and CBD may have recently become a household name, but they’re far from being new. The history of cannabis use dates back at least 12,000 years and some research points to much, much further back in time than that. Archaeological evidence on cannabis use throughout history includes ancient Asian burial mounds, the Silk Road, and Viking Ships.

Hemp is thought to be the oldest cultivated crops on the planet. A popular belief places cannabis in Central Asia thousands of years ago.

Europe appears to be among the first continents to grow cannabis. Researchers believe cannabis spread throughout Europe after having been harvested for medical and spiritual purposes. There’s even evidence that cannabis grew wild in Europe during the Stone Age, before vanishing for a time only to return during the Bronze Age around 4,500 years ago. Researchers from that study believe the hemp plant was likely used for its fiber to make textiles.

The first evidence of cannabis in Northern Europe comes from archeologists who uncovered a burial urn dated at 500 BC containing the remnants of cannabis leaves and seeds. Written documents show proof hemp was being cultivated and researched for best practices in the early 1st century AD leading it to become a well-established crop by 400 AD.

Historians believe hemp became such an integral and trusted part of the European industry, that by the 6th century, French builders constructed a hemp-reinforced bridge that is stands today. By the 14th and 15th centuries in Europe, up to 80 percent of clothing and textiles were made from hemp.

European farmers, with centuries of experience, have mastered the cultivation of this incredible plant.

Eventually, hemp made its way into the shipping industry on account of its strength, and resistance to water and salt. Early European explorers in this time depended on hemp canvas, rope, and oakum for their sailing ships. Many historians claim that it was these hemp sails and ropes that made Columbus’ trip to the Americas possible.

While pinpointing an exact year hemp cultivation in Europe began is difficult, it’s clear it’s been happening for a very long time and is considered a well-established tradition. Over these past centuries, Europeans have mastered the best cultivation practices for this versatile and beneficial plant, and understand how to maximize the desirable attributes of the plants, like higher concentrations of CBD. Current estimations suggest that Europe cultivates up to 25 percent of the world’s hemp.

Our Trusted Source for Hemp

Can you think of a hemp farm in the U.S. that has been passed down through generations of family farmers? Probably not, and there’s a reason for that. Hemp cultivation was strictly prohibited in the U.S. for decades, and not until recently was hemp cultivation allowed for commercial purposes.

When HempMeds® made a decision more than a decade ago of where to source hemp for its CBD products, it looked to a place with a rich history in hemp cultivation. Somewhere where using pesticides is an unfamiliar practice. A place where natural farming is the standard.

For us, that place was Europe. HempMeds® makes its CBD oil from hemp grown on a generational, family-owned farm in the Netherlands, one of Europe’s leading agricultural countries.

Unlike domestic hemp growers, who only have a few years of experience growing hemp seeds bred to thrive in the climates and soils of other countries, cultivators in Europe have been growing hemp for generations.

These families of farmers grow our hemp free of chemical fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides to help ensure that the plants are free of any outside contamination that can affect our final products. With the ideal cooler growing environment, these families of farmers simply let nature take its course.

We tested over 3000 cultivars of hemp before settling on the one that would thrive on the Northern European farms on which we grow our crops and produce the optimal ratio of CBD for use in our hemp oil products. HempMeds®’ CBD hemp oil is sourced from a unique variety of non-GMO hemp that contains reliably higher levels of CBD.

HempMeds® uses hemp seeds that are all certified with the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) for the UK and Central European markets. The OECD provides a platform to coordinate good practices and policies among member countries.

Using European Hemp to Make Superior CBD Products

Once our European-grown hemp plans reach maturity in the late summer, we use a supercritical CO2 extraction process to pull the high-CBD oil from hemp stalks. The hemp oil is then sent to us in the U.S., where our manufacturing facilities use cGMP (the standard for current Godo Manufacturing Practices) to craft final products that you and your family enjoy.

Our CBD oil is also tested at three separate points as part of our Triple Lab Tested® process to ensure that it’s free of contaminants and that it contains a reliable concentration of CBD.

In addition, our CBD products were among the first to be awarded the U.S. Hemp Authority Certification Seal, confirming their quality and safety. When it comes to a trusted source for CBD, we set the standard.
