Using Hemp Seeds to Bread Chicken

Using Hemp Seeds for Chicken Breading (shutterstock_232096453)It’s well known that hemp seeds add a desirable crunchy texture when sprinkled onto salads and mixed into sandwiches. However, the crunchiness of hemp seeds allows them to also work well when used to bread poultry, because they’ll leave the outside of your chicken crispy while helping to keep the inside of it moist. Plus, the seeds are high in protein, essential fatty acids omega-3 and omega-6, and fiber. Next time, instead of using eggs and breadcrumbs to bread your baked chicken, reach for the olive oil and hemp seeds. Doing so will not only increase the natural health benefits, but will make your breaded chicken a completely gluten-free meal.

Hemp seeds can be used to bread chicken breasts, thighs and drumsticks. Before you begin, preheat your oven to 400 degrees. You’ll need to prepare two bowls; one that contains a mixture of ¼ cup of olive oil and 1/8 cup of balsamic vinegar and the other that contains a mixture of 1 teaspoon of sea salt, 1 teaspoon of pepper, 2 teaspoons of garlic powder and 1/4 cup of hemp seeds. For those who consume dairy, you can also add 2 tablespoons of Parmesan cheese to the hemp seed mixture.

You’ll take the chicken through two steps before it’s ready for baking. First, dunk each piece of chicken into the bowl of olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Next, place the chicken into hemp seed mixture until the chicken is thoroughly coated. Lay each piece of chicken out on a cooking tray and bake for 15 to 20 minutes, flipping the chicken halfway through. When time is up, use a knife to cut through the thickest part of the chicken to check for any pinkness. If you see some, return the chicken to the oven and cook for another five minutes, and then retest the chicken to make sure it’s fully cooked. Serve the chicken with your favorite dipping sauce like barbeque sauce or honey mustard. It can also be cut up and laid over a bed of salad.
