Myths About CBD Hemp Oil Busted

There are many myths and misconceptions surrounding hemp and CBD, leading to confusion and apprehension among hemp oil customers. Here we shine a light on a few of these myths, revealing the truth about CBD hemp oil.

Hemp and marijuana are the same plant

False. Although commonly confused, hemp and marijuana are two very distinct plants. However, they are both part of the cannabis genus, giving them several similarities as well.

Hemp is a cannabis plant that is harvested commercially for its seeds and stalks. The hemp plant grows sturdy and tall, up to 2 to 4 meters in height, without the need for herbicides or pesticides. For cannabis to be considered hemp, it must contain no more than 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) per dry weight. THC is the active compound in marijuana that causes its euphoric effect.

Marijuana is a cannabis plant that is most frequently harvested for its euphoric, psychoactive properties, which are responsible for making users feel high or stoned. The marijuana plant is cultivated specifically for its flowers, which contain the highest levels of THC in the plant. Through selective breeding, varieties or strains of marijuana can contain THC concentrations that range from 10 percent to up to 30 percent.

Marijuana is naturally lower in CBD than THC. Since it contains high levels of THC, use and possession of marijuana, whether for recreational or medical reasons, remains federally illegal in the U.S., although states have passed laws that have legalized either medical or recreational marijuana.

Hemp oil will get you high

False. Because CBD oil products are derived from hemp, they are naturally low in THC, the chemical compound in cannabis that gets users high. The level of THC in our hemp is over 30 times less than the least potent marijuana strains, so it’s impossible for hemp to get a user “high”. Instead, hemp is naturally higher in CBD. CBD is completely non-psychoactive and therefore won’t cause a high, making it safe for use by anyone, regardless of age.

Hemp oil is illegal in the U.S.

False. Although it is legal to manufacture products containing CBD from naturally low-THC hemp here in the U.S., it is still largely illegal to grow hemp in America, with small exceptions being made for pilot programs through the 2014 Farm Bill. Therefore, HempMeds® must import all the hemp oil used in the formulation of our products from international sources.

Hemp has become a popular legal source of cannabinoids like CBD in a number of countries around the world. Legal hemp is classified here in the U.S. as having a THC content of less than 0.3% by dry weight. Working with farms in Europe, we grow hemp that produces an ideal ratio of cannabinoids and import to the U.S. for formulation into our line of award-winning CBD hemp oil products.

CBD from Marijuana is Better than CBD from Hemp

False. The chemical compound CBD is the same whether it comes from hemp or marijuana. The body can’t tell where CBD originates, it simply interacts with it, as it would any cannabinoid, using the endocannabinoid system.

A good analogy for this is citrus fruits. In the same way that marijuana and hemp are both cannabis plants, lemon and oranges are both citrus plants. Both lemons and oranges are sources of vitamin C, just like hemp and marijuana are both sources of CBD. The body doesn’t know the difference between sources of vitamin C any more than it can tell between sources of CBD.

Using supercritical CO2, we can extract and filter oil that is up to 38% pure CBD. By further purifying the oil, we are able to isolate CBD to create an extract that is over 99% pure CBD. With innovative technologies like these being applied to our extraction process, we are able to produce unrivaled CBD products.
