Marijuana Legalized In Alabama(?)

If you saw this headline online last week, you probably shook your head, refocused your eyes, and thought, “What the…???”

Alabama, legalizing marijuana!? Home to some of the strictest marijuana laws in the nation? Home to Jeff Sessions, the current administration’s Attorney General who is famous for the quote, “No good people smoke marijuana.”?

Well, it turns out, the whole thing was a hoax by a clickbait site. Which is about the only part of this story that makes sense!

Happy Hoaxaween!

Released on October 31st, (maybe they confused Halloween with April Fool’s Day?), prank/clickbait website React365 posted this fake news article:

Governor Kay Ivey passed a law legalizing the use of recreational and medicinal marijuana for the state of Alabama

As of November, first 2017 marijuana will be legal

Overall support for legalizing marijuana has hit 64 30 states in the district of Columbia currently have laws broadly legalizing marijuana

I knew Gallup poll released earlier this month shows that a record high percentage of Americans now support legalizing marijuana

For the first time, immaturity of Republicans are in favor of legalizing marijuana as well

Update coming soon

The Fakest Of Fake News

When you click the link, it does sort of look like a legit website story/entry. If someone glanced at it, sure, they might get fooled.

However, if you actually read the copy, it’s random and scattered, chock full of typos, bad grammar, and what can only be described as errors. The best one being the line about how the majority of Republicans now favor marijuana legalization (which was an actual, real Gallup poll) and they said, “For the first time immaturity of Republicans…” “Immaturity” should obviously be “the majority”, which is pretty funny in its own right.

Perhaps the biggest clue that this was a total fake report, was if you scroll down a bit on their site, it says in bold letters, “Create a prank!” Apparently, this site specializes in letting its users create fake stories to use in social media and other user outlets.

Dig a little further and you’ll find a disclaimer that reads, “This website is an entertainment website, news are created by users. These are humorous news, fantasy, fictional, that should not be seriously taken or as a source of information.”

Sorry ‘Bama, no legalized marijuana for you. In fact, we’re pretty sure you’re going to be one of the last dominos, if not the last one, to fall in that fight. With some of the strictest laws in the country, especially for sales and cultivation, legal cannabis in Alabama is a ways off.

Currently, 29 states and Washington D.C. have laws legalizing marijuana in some form. If you applied a color code to label your state’s chance at legalizing marijuana in any form, California would be forrest green, and Alabama would be Crimson red.
