02 Mar CBD Sunscreen: An Innovative Combination from Dixie Botanicals® and Surface®
You’re likely well familiar with the importance of applying a quality sunscreen to protect your skin, but what could the addition of CBD mean for consumers looking to nourish and soften their skin every day? A new CBD-infused sunscreen from leading CBD brand Dixie Botanicals® and premium sunscreen maker Surface® provides a clear answer.
It’s true — CBD has found its way into all types of skincare and bath products over the past few years, as more is discovered about its rejuvenating skin-nourishing properties. And now, consumers can even enjoy CBD’s natural balancing benefits in a premium light-on-the-skin sunscreen cream designed for everyday use.
HempMeds®’ CBD brand Dixie Botanicals® recently partnered with Surface®, Southern California makers of top-quality sunscreen and after-suncare products, to develop one of the very first CBD-infused sunscreens.
Dixie Botanicals® and Surface® appear to be the perfect combination. While the two respected brands operate in different industries, both have dedicated themselves to providing solutions to the sports and active community: Dixie Botanicals® by crafting CBD oil products to augment physically active lifestyles, and Surface® by providing high-quality suncare and skincare products designed for fans of the outdoors.
Together, they have created a long-lasting, water-resistant sunscreen that also softens and rejuvenates the skin. This innovative sunscreen combines the exceptional sun-shielding capabilities of Surface®’s premium sunscreen lotion with the skin-restoring effects of Dixie Botanicals® pure CBD.
Surface®: Dedicated to Conscious, Light-On-The-Skin Suncare Products
Surface® CEO Guy Trotter spent roughly 30 years in the action sports industry and even traveled around the world surfing competitively before launching his sunscreen and after-suncare company in 2012. He decided to get into the skin protection industry after noticing that there were no suncare brands catering to the action sports community he was a part of.
“Nobody was speaking to motocross, off-road, skateboarding, snowboarding, surfing — all those action sports and so that’s what really made me want to get into the business,” Trotter explained in a phone interview with HempMeds®. “I saw an opportunity.”
With Surface®, Trotter set out to make suncare products that align with the lifestyle of athletes and anyone who is active outdoors. What he saw on the market focused too much on SPF levels, rather than crafting an effective yet light-on-the-skin suncare cream that active consumers would feel comfortable applying every day.
“My background is surf and I’ve been in the surf industry forever,” Trotter explained. “I used to hate wearing sunscreen, so one of the things we set out to do was make sure that our sunscreen was very, very comfortable to wear. We call ourselves the world’s most comfortable sunscreen. Every recipe that we develop first and foremost has to be light and clean feeling so it’s comfortable to wear and a consumer or person doesn’t mind reapplying it when needed.”
“So you’re not putting on a thick, goopy, you know, mineral sunscreen when you’re just walking your dog. You’re able to put on a lighter, more comfortable product.” – Surface CEO Guy Trotter
Like a growing number of consumers, Surface® is very conscious of ingredients and manufacturing practices. The company prioritizes formulating their suncare products with only high-quality ingredients. All of their suncare products are reef-safe, meaning they don’t contain any oxybenzone and octinoxate that could have toxic effects on coral reefs and other marine life.
“A lot of people are walking away from what I call dinosaur brands and those are the brands that have been around a long time that really haven’t … they’ve focused on pricing more than the quality of their ingredients,” Trotter said.
As an athlete himself, Trotter has been able to build real-life relationships with many people in the action sports community. The company sponsors and works closely with motocross, surf, off-road truck racers, bicyclists, and snowboarders.
Surface® partners with a long list of action sports athletes, including Baja 500 racer Rachel Van Diepen and motocross athlete Blake Wilkey, who now keeps the CBD sunscreen in his race vehicles at all times. On the surf side, there’s pro-surfer Duran Barr who competes in the World Surf League, and Georgina Monti who spends most of her days kitesurfing in the Caribbean.
Even as Surface® works closely with these well-known extreme sports athletes, Trotter describes Surface® as “a bootstrapped family-run company.” His daughter, now 19, handles the company’s social media and assists with sales. His son, almost 23, serves as the company’s operations manager. Trotter’s wife is the office manager and handles all of Surface®’s order processing.
“That’s my biggest achievement– to be able to work with my family, my kids, and just watch this place and work with them and we make it grow,” Trotter shared.
The Introduction of CBD
It was roughly two years ago when Trotter first heard about CBD from the athletes that Surface® sponsors.
“I started hearing about CBD from some of those athletes that were using it for muscle recovery,” Trotter said. “I took a very skeptical approach to CBD, in terms of what it’s doing, you know, is it a snake oil situation? You know, what’s going on? And the benefits and the information that I was receiving was just overwhelming.”
CBD-infused sunscreen: An innovative pairing of two skin-boosting substances that simultaneously shields from the sun’s damaging rays and supports overall skin health.
Trotter admits that he didn’t set out to invent anything new, but after investigating CBD and its benefits for the skin more, he realized it would be perfect to pair it with a suncare product.
“CBD really zeroes in on helping your skin,” he said. “Moisture balance within your skin, anti-aging. Those are all key, key elements that consumers look for in a skin product, a skincare product. And that’s where, again, CBD kind of stood out for that.”
CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a natural compound sourced from hemp that promotes wellness by interacting with the body’s endocannabinoid system, a major regulatory network tasked with keeping the body balanced and performing at its best. CBD has been added to a number of topical products because of the balancing properties it offers the skin.
Once applied, CBD compounds interact with nearby receptors in the skin to stimulate the endocannabinoid system, helping moderate the skin’s response to sun damage and regulating the renewal of skin cells.
For athletes, fitness enthusiasts, or anyone who regularly goes outside, CBD topicals and the benefits of CBD sunscreen can be used throughout the day as needed for soothing relief to help defend against damage caused by free radicals, environmental exposure, sun exposure, and aging.
The Dixie Botanicals® and Surface® Partnership
Once Trotter decided to pursue the development of a CBD sunscreen, he faced the issue of finding a CBD manufacturer that shared the same high-quality and manufacturing standards at Surface®.
He started talking to various CBD suppliers but found that they lacked the expertise and reliability he wanted in a partner.
“I was not very thrilled with any of them really. They just weren’t as professional as I’d hoped they would be, given the intensity of the market for CBD and how fast it’s growing.”
That is until he connected with Dixie Botanicals®, HempMeds® CBD lifestyle brand known for its CBD oil products aimed at augmenting physically active lifestyles. Dixie Botanicals® is the first hemp CBD brand to gain national and international distribution.
Trotter was introduced to Dixie Botanicals® through an individual he knew through the action sports world, Matt Gleason, who works on the marketing team for Dixie Botanicals®.
“Matt had reached out to me and introduced me to Dixie Botanicals® and he introduced me to the other companies, the parent company, and everything else with Dixie Botanicals®,” Trotter explained. “And I really enjoyed their structure, their professionalism, and what they have to offer in terms of where they want to go with CBD and what they wanted to do with it. It just seemed like a perfect match-up.”
As the first company to create mainstream hemp-based CBD products, Dixie Botanicals®’ line of athlete-friendly CBD products has helped normalize CBD use worldwide. All of the brand’s products are crafted using expertly cultivated hemp, extracted using non-toxic supercritical CO2, and laboratory-tested for both purity and safety.

Educating Consumers on CBD
Since Dixie Botanicals® + Surface® CBD-Infused SPF50 Sheer Touch Sunscreen first hit the market in 2019, it’s been stocked by action sports and water-related businesses from Hawaii all the way to Florida.
Trotter does acknowledge that consumers are still learning about CBD and its benefits for the skin, and that Surface® is regularly educating consumers and businesses about its beneficial properties when included in sunscreen.
“What does CBD do for, you know, what does CBD do for me in a sunscreen? A lot of questions in terms of, does it rub into your muscle? Does it go into your joints? And obviously, the answer’s no, it’s not about that, it’s about your skin, which is the largest organ in your body and you want to take care of it as best you can on its exterior. And that… it’s just more education to the consumer on the benefits of CBD in sunscreen.”
For consumers who are curious about CBD sunscreen, but hesitant for any reason, Trotter offers advice:
“I think they need to try it out. CBD is proving itself to be a very, very viable way… a healthy choice for people, and I think it’s something that they should try. If they’re willing to try, you know, sunscreens and cosmetics with cucumber in it, or with other, you know, different ways of moisturizing your skin with coconut oils or whatever, this is the same thing with CBD.”
