Coconut Oil and Hemp Oil: How MCT Oil Acts as a Carrier for Cannabinoids

It seems like everyone these days is discussing the benefits of CBD oil and looking for information about the best way to add this powerful product to their routines.

A common question people ask is in regards to the most efficient way to take CBD oil so that the cannabinoids in the oil have the easiest time interacting with the body. It is here that coconut oil and CBD oil’s relationship comes into focus.

Cannabinoids are fat soluble, meaning they break down and are stored in fat rather than water. Because of this trait, cannabinoids are most effective when consumed with fat, increasing their bioavailability. However, it appears that the type of fat matters.

Saturated fats are important carriers for cannabinoids to be absorbed into the body. Coconut oil contains saturated fat at levels close to 80%, giving cannabinoids the fat cells it needs to move through the body, encouraging faster processing and use by the endocannabinoid system.

Specifically, coconut oil contains medium-chain triglycerides or fatty acids. Using coconut oil or other products that contain medium-chain triglycerides (MCT oils) triggers a relatively rapid release of cannabinoids when compared to other oils because MCT oils are directly metabolized into energy by the liver. This means that your body can burn those fats and put them – and the cannabinoids they hold – to use right away.

It is for this reason that HempMeds® chooses to formulate several of our CBD oil products with MCT oil sourced sustainably from coconut and palm oils.

Created by mixing our cannabidiol (CBD) hemp oil with medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil, our RSHO™ Liquid includes all the benefits of our RSHO™ hemp oils, including high concentrations of CBD and essential vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids.

Our MCT oil is derived from wholesome coconut oil and sustainably sourced palm oil. Besides being a wonderful source for MCTs or saturated fats, these oils create a stronger binding agent for cannabinoids than unsaturated fats, making them a reliably effective carrier for CBD products.

Mixing CBD oil with MCT oils like coconut oil also expands the versatility of your CBD oil, increasing the ways in which it can be added to your system.

RSHO™ Liquid is created with just CBD hemp oil and MCT oil, so it fits well into any healthy diet. Although it was designed to be taken by itself, RSHO Liquid can be added to almost any prepared food. However, it isn’t suggested you cook with the oil. Doing so can diminish potency.

Instead, RSHO™ Liquid can be mixed with other ingredients like frozen berries, fresh greens, almond milk, and chia seeds and hemp hearts to make a nutritious, high energy smoothie or acai bowl. Alternatively, mix RSHO™ CBD oil Liquid into oatmeal and top with sliced fruit for a balanced start to your day.

RSHO Liquid can also be added to a variety of salads as a replacement for, or in addition to, a light dressing or stirred into sauces and curries for a heart healthy lunch.

To make a custom CBD hemp oil infused bulletproof coffee, include a serving or two of RSHO™ Liquid in your favorite cup of coffee or end your days with your daily serving of RSHO™ Liquid stirred into warm milk and honey for a soothing nightcap.

Similarly, RSHO™ Tincture combines MCT oil with our pure CBD oil for a lower potency version of our RSHO™ Liquid. These tinctures can be placed under the tongue and held for 90 seconds or mixed with your favorite foods or beverages.

You can also use coconut oil with your RSHO™ pure hemp oil from the oral applicator for an effective topical that can be applied directly to the skin. In order to use RSHO™ pure CBD hemp oils for topical application, it is best to blend the CBD hemp oil with a carrier oil. Customers will often use coconut oil as their carrier of choice.

For single applications, you can add the coconut oil to the desired area first, using enough to wet the skin without becoming excessively oily. Then, immediately rub the RSHO™ into the area, blending the RSHO™ and coconut oils as you do, massaging deeply into the skin. After application, we suggest covering the area with a gauze pad or wrap to keep the RSHO™ from staining clothing or furniture.

A quarter gram of RSHO™ is enough for a small area, like a foot, knee, elbow, or hand. For larger areas, like the shoulder or back, a half gram of RSHO™ provides greater coverage. When using RSHO™ pure hemp oil, this method provides between 42 and 190 mg of CBD per application, depending on the label used and the amount applied.
